"Fountain" line of blast inhibition devices are designed to protect people and structures against blast, thermal and fragmentation effects resulted from a detonation of high energy charges (up to 1 kg in TNT equivalent). The devices are recommended for area mine clearance, to be used in metro, railway stations, state offices and other crowded locations where terrorist acts are most likely.
The feature of the device is a winning combination of high protecting characteristics with an easy and safe application: the device is carefully placed on a suspicious object, a staff doesn't have to touch or move the object, which greatly reduces the risk.
"Fountain" is a handheld container consisting of several elastic shell compartments filled with a multi-phase medium. The container is equipped with an anti-fragment screen made of soft armor over its entire perimeter. The shape of the device enables complete isolating of a suspicious object.
"Fountain" devices have been in production and successfully used in practice many times since 1998.

When having detected a suspicious object, place a "Fountain" device on it in such a way that the device completely covers it and isolates from the ambient space. There is no necessity to touch or move the object, which reduces the risk of its detonation. The application of the device does not require special training. "Fountain" does not hinder X-ray inspection, it also can be lifted manually or with the help of some special device for visual inspection of a suspicious object. The object can be detonated inside the "Fountain" device if necessary. In that case, the device efficiently suppresses blast, thermal and fragmentation effects, and does not result in additional fragment formation.
Its basic operating principle is based on initial attenuation of the blast wave while it is passing through the layer of two-phase medium, this is followed by the blast energy dissipation due to the device destruction and its transformation into the drop kinetic energy. The two-phase medium also suppresses the thermal blast effect. The fragment resistant screen provides additional protection against fragmentation.
By now there are more than 1500 blast inhibition devices "Fountain" in use in Russia. Law enforcement and military bodies, financial institutions including Central Bank of Russia apply "Fountains" actively and with good results. Practically all railway stations, airports and some subway stations of St. Petersburg, Moscow and some other big cities are equipped with "Fountain" devices.
"Fountain" devices are not provided with spare parts by the manufacture. In case of a damage resulting in deterioration of protective characteristics (cutting and punctures), the device must be replaced.
Each device comes with an Instruction Manual included in its Manufacturer Passport. Warranty -three years. "Fountain" devices do not require special storage facilities or care. It is ready for operation.
"Fountain" devices have come through a serious of field testing, obtained certification of Russian State Standard. The devices have been added to the Interior Affaires Ministry' and the Ministry of Defense' arsenals.
The "Fountain" device reduces a shock blast wave effect resulted from the detonation of a High Explosive (HE) charge of a maximum weight indicated in the Manufacturer Passport to 10-20 times in comparison with the detonation of the same "uncovered" charge. At 2.5-3.5 m distance from the epicenter the shock wave pressure is fallen to the safe for human life level (50 kPa). At the detonation of a hand grenade covered by a "Fountain" device the fragmentation is 10-30 times less and the fragmentation area is 200 times less than at the detonation in the open. The thermal effect is localized by the "Fountain", which prevents fires and burn injuries.
